The purpose of this page is to provide an example of how technology can and will be infused in lessons to transform learning. The example provided on this page is centered around Kindergarteners becoming young scientists!

Grade Level-Kindergarten

SOL K.6-The student will investigate and understand the differences between living organisms and nonliving objects.

Learning Goal-The student will classify living and nonliving things.

Lesson Description/Learning Steps-

In this lesson, students learn about  distinguishing living things from nonliving things. By viewing a fun video and participating in an online activity review of essential content, students will be able to find and classify things/objects as living or nonliving.
(*Please note that this is an online activity and will require parental support and assistance.)

Step One-Students will watch the introductory video below explaining living and nonliving things.

Online Activity

Living and Nonliving
Things

Step Two-Students will complete the
online review activity related to living
and nonliving things, using the following

link
https://www.tinytap.com/activities/
g3bxa/play/living-and-non-living-things
.
The provided online review activity is
a perfect introduction to step three of
this lesson!

Step Three-Students will go on a
nature walk with parents/guardians
to find and classify living and nonliving
things in their own backyards. Students
will draw pictures of the living and
nonliving things found and classified on
a sheet of paper. Please see the provided
example at the bottom of this page
for guidance.

Step Four-Students will create and
share a flipgrid video(with parental assistance)
of their findings and drawings with the class
by
visiting https://flipgrid.com/98855aee.
Students will need to visit the flipgrid
page multiple times to view all of their
classmates videos and amazing finds!
Please be ready to chat with me about your
findings at our next live meeting!

Questions to Ponder...
  • How did the online teaching environment influence your design decisions?
  • Teaching online is a whole different ballgame! Using technology that is easily accessible, easy to use, is engaging for students, and is effectively covering the content...is ESSENTIAL!
  • Explain the design of the new activity using technology in relation to the TPACK framework.  In particular, discuss...the content and how the technology helps students build a better understanding of the content.
    • The new activity would definitely help students build a better understanding of the content as the content is intertwined with beneficial technology and pedagogical practices that are engaging and motivating for students. This lesson was developed to explain and teach specific content and knowledge effectively, through the use of technology and motivating students to learn. In addition, the technology implemented in this lesson is covering the learning goal for this lesson  thoroughly and accurately.
  • Referencing the SAMR Model, how are you using technology transformatively in the activity?  Explain.
  • Technology is being used transformatively in this lesson as it is taking the content being covered to the next level by allowing students the opportunity to share and explain their learnings and scientific findings in a new way. They are no longer just finding and classifying their things/objects...they are scientifically sharing their findings with their classmates using their voices! In addition, technology is allowing them to listen, share, and learn from their peers in such a meaningful way! I also believe that this lesson offers so much more than science...it is assisting in teaching our youngest learners how to take pride in their work, present their ideas to others, and share information effectively!
